AS we welcome in a new decade and contin- ue to focus on the op- portunities, threats and challenges our industry faces, I hope you had an enjoyable Christmas and New Year period and that you, your relatives and friends remain safe as we continue to expe- rience severe bushfires around the country.
• APIQP review fre- quency;
• Development of a sim- plified QA system for small producers;
• Biosecurity standards to enable business con- tinuity in the event of an emergency animal dis- ease;
• Antibiotic-free verifi- cation option; and
• Organic verification option.
Consultations with pro- ducers and other industry partners for the APIQP major review will be held in February and March 2020 – these were de- ferred to allow the stake- holder consultations for APL’s 2020-25 Strategic Plan to be held from Sep- tember to December 2019.
All members of the pork supply chain, including (but not limited to) pig producers, retailers, pro- cessors, transporters, gov- ernment officers and en- vironmental consultants are invited to participate in this major review.
Nine stakeholder com- munications meetings have been scheduled – these dates and details (where confirmed) are shown in the table below.
There are two meet- ings in every state, except Western Australia.
For our Tasmanian pro- ducers, we will hold a teleconference.
Locations of the meet- ings are Young and Ca- sino in NSW, Ballarat and Bendigo in Victoria,
Murray Bridge and Au- burn in South Australia, Toowoomba and Murgon in Queensland and Perth in WA.
Also, APL in conjunc- tion with NSW Farmers Association are holding meetings in Casino on January 30 and Kempsey on January 31 in response to processing issues and African swine fever fears in northern NSW.
The meetings will cover ASF and biosecurity is- sues as well as market access matters that have been brought about due to Macleay River Meats (Everson Food Proces- sors), Frederickton no longer processing pigs.
As soon as we have con- firmed further details for the WA and Queensland events as well as the tele- conference for Tasmanian producers, these will be communicated in APL’s weekly communique, di- rectly emailed to produc- ers and also provided on the APIQP website at: apiq.com.au/2019-apiq_- major-review
We look forward to see- ing you at one of these events to enable you to provide your input into the Major Review.
Your thoughts are wel- comed and can also be provided via email at apiq@australianpork. com.au

As many of you know, Australian Pork Limited is required to conduct a major review of the Aus- tralian Pork Industry Quality Assurance Pro- gram (APIQP) every four years.
emerging local and inter- national livestock quality assurance issues that have the capacity to affect Aus- tralian pig producers.
The preliminary re- port provided to APIQM concluded that A PIQP’s scope of risk management and independent third- party audit arrangements compared favourably to the other international QA schemes reviewed.
Prime Consulting In- ternational identified that the Netherlands IKB Varken scheme stood out from other programs, with a coverage of 99 percent of all commer- cial pork produced in the Netherlands, similar breadth of risk manage- ment and is recognised as an equivalent scheme against GLOBALG.A.P IFA Standard Version 5.1.
Within Australia, the other quality assurance schemes operating in the pork industry are prin- cipally animal welfare based and their breadth of coverage across other risk
management areas is low- er compared with APIQP. A Reference Group has been established, involv- ing representatives from across the pork value chain, and this group will meet on January 21 in
Melbourne.
The Reference Group
will discuss the broad is- sues listed below in detail, prioritise these and pro- vide recommendations to APIQM on which issues should be taken forward to the industry stakehold- er meetings.
The broad issues for dis- cussion by the Reference Group include:
• The definition of a ‘site’ and a ‘paddock’;
• Physical castration in the Outdoor Standards;
• Environmental stand- ards for indoor piggeries;
• Blockchain opportuni- ties for the pork industry;
• Sow confinement after mating in outdoor bred certified piggeries;
• Audit frequency for high-performing organi- sations;
The APIQPprogram aims to be an effective risk management tool for Aus- tralian pork producers to support their businesses, assist with market access and provide reassurance to customers and other indus- try stakeholders.
To enable the system to do this, a good under- standing of stakeholder needs, both now and into the future, is required.
After public tender, Prime Consulting Inter- national Ltd was commis- sioned in late May 2019 to undertake this review in consultation with stake- holders and in association with APIQP manage- ment.
The major review in- volves the review of all APIQP standards, poli- cies, technical, manage- ment and administrative documentation and the third-party auditing sys- tem.
It therefore plays an im- portant role in ensuring the APIQP program’s overall integrity, credibil- ity and preparedness.
This review aims to ensure the industry has a quality assurance pro- gram that can maintain credibility and continues to meet the future needs of the pork supply chain.
A benchmark analysis has been conducted that has compared other in- ternational livestock qual- ity assurance systems to APIQP and considered
