High alert for African swine fever
Nordic News
I HOPE this edition of

Australian Pork News- paper finds all readers well after the festive sea- son, particularly those on the east coast safe from the fires that are currently raging.
There are actually very few wild pigs in Denmark (estimated around 100) and they are only located on the mainland, but sig- nificant efforts are being made to exterminate them by hunters and producers alike.
It is almost unbelievable that some communities that have had to deal with such a prolonged drought may now have to deal with such cruel circumstances.
Aside from the fence, some of the other major preparations by the Dan- ish industry include:
It is heartening to see and hear so many stories of the Australian commu- nity spirit to help those affected – let alone the bravery and unyielding efforts of the firefighters in protecting Australian lives, homes and nature.
ern hemisphere, we are facing significantly differ- ent temperatures, though interestingly the past year in the north of Denmark has seen record-breaking rainfall, meaning a lot of crops have severely suf- fered.

Though ASF has been present in eastern Poland for some time (2014), the discovery in early No- vember 2019 indicates perhaps the containment efforts are not strong enough given the disease has travelled about 300km with no official identified mechanism of transfer- ence.
As does everyone, I hope for a swift end to the dev- astation so people can re- turn to their homes and begin to move forward as soon as possible.
Pig prices are holding well, with the Danish Crown reporting pric- es for slaughter pigs of 13.6 DKK per kilogram
However, it is with cau- tious optimism that pro- ducers are enjoying the prices, given the recent discovery of African swine fever just 40km from the German border in Nowogrod Bobrzanski, Poland.
• Stricter rules in bio- security between farms (for example, 48-hour quarantine for trucks from an ASF ‘high-risk area’, and a seven-day quaran- tine for trucks that have been to a ‘high-risk area’ in a country with con- firmed ASF.

The case that was re- ported to the World Or- ganisation for Animal Health was a wild pig that died after being hit by a car – suggesting the dis- ease could be well estab- lished.
• Specialist groups working with smallhold- ers and pet pig owners (mostly around the risk of contamination via kitchen scraps).
As is the case in Bel- gium, ASF is only detect- ed in the wild pig popula- tion in Poland.
• Stricter penalties for infringement in relation to risk – specifically the illegal importation of food from third-world coun- tries and dirty transport vehicles.
There have been no further reported cases in western Poland (or indeed Germany) since Novem- ber, however, Denmark is on red alert should there be.
• Collaboration with hunting associations and free testing for all wild pigs killed (incentive as free examination for trichinella) as well as the permit to hunt wild pigs both day and night (traps are also being laid).
The ‘pig-proof fence’ that was being construct- ed on the border between Denmark and Germany is now completed and ready for closure if and when ASF is detected in Ger- many.
• A significant ASF sim- ulation exercise in 2019 (held across four days with over 40 individual organisations involved).
It measures 67km along the border and is 1.5m above ground and 0.5m below, with some strategic gaps to allow for local wildlife to cross the fence – however it has been de- signed to be totally closed when needed.
(including electricity). • Strengthening of erinary preparedness.

There are also wildlife cameras at these gaps that are constantly monitored now – with any wild pigs in Denmark to be im-
Denmark has been pre- paring for a number of years as ASF has been slowly spreading west in Europe, and with an in- dustry the size of 1 mil- lion sows (compared to a 5.6 million human popu- lation), it is no wonder, as pig production is vital to the national economy.
• Significant targeted public education (includ- ing travellers, farm visi- tors and farm staff).
• Double fencing of all free range pig production
