Elanco becomes a fully dedicated animal health company
State Governments
should give
farmers rate relief
ELANCO Animal Health Incorporated recently an- nounced it is now a fully independent company, be- coming the second-largest exclusively dedicated ani- mal health company in the world.
Last September, Elanco listed on the New York Stock Exchange and on March 11 Eli Lilly and Company, Elanco’s for- mer parent company, completed the divestiture of its ownership.
This completes the journey Elanco began in 2017, when Lilly first announced potential stra- tegic alternatives for the 64-year-old animal health company.
Elanco’s independence is a result of its diversifi- cation of the business and expansion of its global footprint – from largely a US and livestock-focused business to an even split between US and inter- national sales.
Furthermore, the com- pany built a strong pet business that now ac- counts for a third of the company globally.
Elanco president and CEO Jeff Simmons said, “This is a historic day for everyone at Elanco.”
“It reflects our team’s hard work over the past two years, the confidence that we have the right strategy and are success- fully progressing the ex- ecution against it.
“With this milestone behind us, we look for- ward to a singular focus delivering innovative solutions and services for our customers – the farm- ers, veterinarians and pet owners that are central to our success.
“We welcome our new Elanco shareholders who join us and offer our ap- preciation to our custom- ers, and Lilly for the dec- ades of support.”
Elanco is a leader in an attractive, growing global animal health market, which takes advantage of strong industry growth drivers: a global demand for protein – meat, milk, fish and eggs – increas- ing by about 75 percent by 2051.
Furthermore, people have pets and are taking better care of them, which means pets are also living longer and may experi- ence diseases of aging, similar to people.
Animal wellbeing is al- so becoming increasingly important to consumers.
Whether a cat, cow or chicken, people want ani- mals to live quality lives and be well cared for.
Sixty percent of consum- ers say they are increasing- ly concerned about animal welfare and how livestock are cared for.
As a fully dedicated animal health company, Elanco will continue to identify targeted inno- vations to deliver on its promise of product and service innovation to ben- efit farmers, pet owners, veterinarians and the ani- mals in their care.
Elanco Australasia act- ing country director Dr Gunter Schuele said, “This milestone marks a new chapter in Elanco’s www.porknews.com.au
history as we start our journey as an independent animal health company.”
“Australia already has high rates of pet owner- ship, with the population of cats and dogs continu- ing to increase.
“Australia’s livestock industries are also well positioned to help meet the growing global pro- tein demand.”
Elanco has established a portfolio of trusted global brands and built strong customer relationships over the years, offering additional solutions and services beyond the prod- ucts to support producers operationally and analyti- cally.
Elanco maintains a live- stock research facility in Australia to ensure fu- ture innovations meet the needs of local customers and conditions.
“We are well positioned to capitalise on the strong industry growth drivers and look forward to build- ing a bright future togeth- er with our customers and employees in Australia”, Dr Schuele said.
With 5800 employ- ees and brand presence in 90 countries, Elanco
emphasises its ‘Food and Companionship Enrich- ing Life’ vision across the world.
Elanco is proud of the diversity of cultures, ex- periences and approach- es within the company, which are fundamental to accomplish the goals and objectives of the global marketplace, and espe- cially to achieve the ex- pectations of the commu- nities where its employees live and work.

MINISTER for Agri- culture David Little- proud has written to all State Premiers and Territory Chief Min- isters asking them to relieve farmers and drought-affected small businesses of council rates.
Minister Littleproud has also asked that drought-affected farm- ers paying leasehold to state governments be forgiven those pay- ments.
“One of the things farmers constantly raise with me is wheth- er the state govern- ment can relieve them of their rates,” Minis- ter Littleproud said.
“This would provide immediate, practical
relief to communities hurting from drought.
“Rates are often a huge expense for farm- ers, and with no in- come coming in, pay- ing them can be very hard.
“State Governments should pay the rates on behalf of farmers and small businesses to lo- cal councils, who are also struggling with drought.
“The Federal Gov- ernment is investing $7 billion into drought all up and it’s time the states helped farmers with rates.
“Farmers produce the food we eat and we need to help them through tough times.”
