Traceability and its importance
BUSINESSES are in- creasingly listening to what their customers want and are becoming more transparent about where and how their products are farmed, sourced and made.
product tampering is oc- curring.
the RSPCA Approved certification has indeed come from the farms and abattoirs that are regu- larly assessed against the RSPCA’s animal welfare standards.
For businesses to ac- curately promote the ori- gins of these products, they need to have the systems in place to trace them back to the source.
Effective and well- managed systems fo- cussed on ensuring product traceability also make it easier for busi- nesses to rectify any is- sues if they occur.
To do this, annual as- sessments of each busi- ness in the supply chain of RSPCA Approved products are conducted against our publicly available Chain of Cus- todyStandard.
But how does trace- ability work, and why is it really that important?
• Manage large amounts of product data and information in- cluding the quantity of product supplied and/or received
Australians are driving change for some of our country’s most inten- sively farmed animals, simply through their pur- chasing decisions.
Traceability in food production is the ability to trace the ingredients in a product through a supply chain, all the way back to the source.
• Trace products and ingredients forwards and backwards in their supply chains
When these consumers pick up a product with an animal welfare claim, this needs to be verifi- able to demonstrate how that product is raising the bar for farm animals.
When you pick up a product at your local supermarket or grocer, chances are that the product has been through multiple steps in a supply chain before ending up in your basket.
• Test the systems’ own effectiveness through mock recall exercises
Being able to trace ingredients is not only important for food safety and quality assurance, but it also allows busi- nesses to make sure that any public claims made about their product are true and accurate, and that no substitution or
• Use a mass balance exercise to account for the volume of materials at all stages of produc- tion, to make sure that no substitution or mixing of products is occurring.
By choosing a product with a robust certifica- tion process and strict traceability require- ments, such as RSPCA Approved, conscious consumers can sup- port the companies and farmers who are leading the way in improving welfare for millions of farm animals every year.
What makes a good traceability system
These systems should be able to:

The results are products that represent real advan- tages over both local and imported competitors, that are safer and more economical to use, and are therefore significantly better value for money. Aussie’s self-priming revolution
Some advice from Aussie Pumps, an Aus- tralian manufacturer of great products designed for Australian conditions and applications.
The benefits are enor- mous and Aussie Pumps has come up with a series of great ideas that will ap- peal to farmers.
Aussie Pumps chief en- gineer John Hales said, “When doing our design work, we always talk to users to get feedback for what they think the product should be like.”

A front-mounted clean- out port is built into the pump’s body, mounted below the suction port.
That simple feature means the pump can be cleared of debris or blockage in a matter of minutes without discon- necting suction or dis- charge pipework.
All Aussie GMP pumps come with a unique 3-year pump end warranty. Clean-up Australia
The company has done a huge amount to develop what amounts to being quite unique engine and electric-drive pressure cleaners.
Conceived, designed and built in Australia at the Aussie Pumps facility in Sydney’s Norwest busi- ness district, the machines offer features that are sig- nificantly upgraded when compared to those im- ported from other coun- tries.
The Scud’s unique de- sign is its curved sculpted frame – there are no sharps and when fitted with big 13” steel wheels and flat-free tyres, the machines are highly ma- noeuvrable.
The heart of the system is a ‘Big Berty’ Berto- lini pump gearbox drive running at slow speed – 1450rpm.
