                                    Page 14 %u2013 Australian Pork Newspaper, October 2024 www.porknews.com.auTHE 2024 Pig Veterinarians (APV) Conference held in Wollongong, NSW, from September 4-6 was a great success.The event brought together veterinarians, researchers and industry professionals to explore the latest developments in pig health and welfare.The conference was an invaluable opportunity for attendees to share knowledge, generate fresh ideas and strengthen connections within the veterinary community.A key highlight of the conference was the keynote address by Professor Eric Burrough, sponsored by Australian Pork Limited, a renowned veterinary diagnostic pathologist specialising in enteric diseases of pigs, with a focus on Brachyspiraassociated colitis.Professor Burrough%u2019s extensive expertise and contributions to the field have earned him international recognition.He has delivered lectures at major national and global events and authored or co-authored more than 80 peer-reviewed manuscripts and over 175 conference abstracts and proceedings.His distinguished career has been marked by accolades, including the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine Award for Early Achievement in Research (2013) and the Iowa State University Award for Outstanding Achievement in Extension or Professional Practice (2023).At the APV Conference, Professor Burrough delivered four key presentations covering topics central to pig health:%u2022 Porcine respiratory pathology and laboratory diagnosis %u2022 Aggregated diagnostics data in swine disease monitoring %u2022 Porcine gastrointestinal pathology and laboratory diagnosis %u2022 Applications of genetic sequencing technologies in veterinary diagnostics.In addition to his keynote presentations, Professor Burrough conducted an in-depth, two-hour workshop at the Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute on gross pathology descriptors, the sampling process, histology slides and case studies.The conference featured a diverse range of presentations on critical topics, including Streptococcus equi zooepidemicus, Japanese encephalitis, swine dysentery and Salmonella, among others.These discussions provided attendees with the latest insights and tools to tackle emerging challenges in pig health.As the veterinary community looks forward to the next APV Conference in 2025, the 2024 event reaffirmed the importance of continued collaboration, education and innovation in ensuring the health and welfare of pigs in Australia and beyond.
