Australia joins global methane discussion
Point of View
THE Australian Gov- ernment has now signed the Global Methane Pledge.
the loop roadmap out- lines how to minimise waste, better utilise manure nutrients and explore new ways to manage hard waste.
The pledge aims to catalyse global action and strengthen support for existing interna- tional methane emission reduction initiatives.
If you don’t know what the environmental impact of your farm is, conducting a life cycle assessment is the first step.
After following the commentary for some time – it’s safe to say that feelings are mixed, and opinions are divided on what we should be doing.
dustry has also com- mitted itself to be carbon neutral by 2030 and is well on track to achieve this goal.
assisting our industry transition to efficient and innovative tech- nology and have in- creased resources in this area to support pro- ducers.
LCAs cover a wide range of impacts but most commonly green- house gas emissions, land use, land use change, energy use and water use.
It’s a contentious move that has many producers concerned, following New Zea- land’s proposed plans on agricultural emis- sions pricing.
The government has indicated that Austral- ia’s decision to sign the pledge will not require reduced herd sizes, nor will taxes be legislated, or levies introduced to reduce livestock emis- sions.
We are investing in research options and ex- ploring new technology for the benefit of the en- tire pork supply chain.
We need current baselines and ongoing benchmarking to help the industry demon- strate our environ- mental credentials.
Signing the pledge has signalled Australia’s voluntary commitment to participate.
As a part of APL’s commitment to sustain- ability, we’ve also de- veloped two roadmaps for the pork sector.
We have invested in a new LCA to help kick- start this process for the pork industry.
As a nation, we join more than 120 coun- tries who have already signed on – joining the global discussion.
However, as with all policy areas, Australian Pork Limited will stay engaged as this develops.
The roadmaps provide information and dem- onstrate actions that businesses can take to reduce carbon emis- sions and close the loop on waste.

Participants signing the pledge agree to take voluntary actions to contribute to a col- lective effort to reduce 2020 level emissions by 30 percent before 2030.
The pork industry is proactively working to reduce its impact on the environment, and we have been for quite some time.

The pork industry should be aware of the Global Methane Pledge but not alarmed by the government’s decision, as we are well posi- tioned as a sector al- ready.
We are working to be the most emissions friendly animal protein industry by 2025.

People coming to a production site scan a QR code on entry, answer a few critical questions to assess their biosecurity risk and receive automated risk mitigation actions.
Reducing visitor disease risk
n Best practices for biosec management
WITH African swine fever and foot and mouth disease on our doorstep, producers are paying more attention to the risks posed by visitors and de- liveries to their piggeries
and are embracing digital visitor logs.
Replacing paper log- books with a comprehen- sive digital process pro- vides best practice bios- ecurity management by:
Managing the risk of people entering a piggery starts with awareness.
• Making it easy for all people to check-in and reg- ister their visit details, al- lowing instant review by producers from any loca- tion
Biosecurity signage should be placed at all entry points to inform people that a biosecurity management plan applies, and that visitors must re- quest and receive approval to enter the property.
• Capturing information about biosecurity risks with a set of tailored ques- tions
Paper visitor logbooks capture only basic contact information and details may be illegible, incom- plete or difficult to access quickly when needed.
• Providing visitors and producers with an imme- diate automatic assessment of their biosecurity risk and recommended miti- gating actions
They may also fail to identify specific visitor risks, including people who may:
• Generating instant alerts to farm staff so that they are aware of who is on the property and what their biosecurity risk is
• Have recently travelled overseas
• Be bringing vehicles, equipment or food that could be contaminated.
