www.porknews.com.au Australian Pork Newspaper, October 2024 %u2013 Page 19MOVING piggery waste is a problem for all pork producers. Its efficient operation has an impact on the health of the animals as well as maintaining productivity.Aussie Pumps Chief Engineer, John Hales, reflects here on the need for highly efficient pumps at affordable prices.%u201cWe know the ability in handling effluent on a continuous and reliable basis is essential,%u201d Hales said.%u201cWe%u2019ve created a major breakthrough by introducing a range of high quality 4%u201d and 6%u201d pumps designed and built in line with ISO9001 standards.%u201cThe good news for piggery operators is the pricing for these impressive products are tens of thousands of dollars cheaper than some of the more expensive North American products on the market.%u201cOur big breakthrough was one of cost reduction without compromising quality, with the product being designed and built to the highest standards,%u201d he said.New big 4%u201d pumpMany of the piggery applications identified by the company require a high-volume pump with heads up to 32m.%u201cWe designed an impeller that would do that with a 4%u201d pump and were able to put it on the market for under $10,000,%u201d Hales said.%u201cBest of all, it%u2019s powered by a heavy duty 15kW motor and is now fitted with a 316 stainless steel impeller as standard,%u201d he said.%u201cThe pumps are selfpriming with an ability to draft water through a 6m lift and feature a wide range of user-friendly features.%u201cWe consider it essential to have a cleanout port built into the pump body, mounted below the suction inlet,%u201d Hales said.%u201cThis can be opened and the internals cleared without having to disconnect any pipework,%u201d he said. The Aussie engineers also incorporated additional features including a silicon carbide mechanical seal with alumina counterface and nitrile rubber seals.Tungsten carbide and Viton seals are also an option. The first-rate, threephase electric motors are close-coupled to the pump body, making the product compact and easy to service. The heavy-duty motor features a 316 stainless steel motor shaft as standard.%u201cWe also understood from talking to piggery operators that the wastewater can be abrasive,%u201d Hales said.%u201cTo protect the cast iron body, we built in a stainless-steel wear plate behind the impeller to provide a long troublefree life.%u201dBig 15kw, 6%u201d pump with a 4 pole motor at a great priceThis new 6%u201d pump produces 4,000LPM maximum flow and easily handles waste solids in suspension. The maximum head is 14m, more than adequate for most effluent pumpout systems. The pumps have been trialled by local government bodies in sewage treatment plants with great success. They are also being used in aquaculture applications with bronze impellers fitted to handle corrosive seawater. The product is available for immediate delivery from Aussie Pumps%u2019 new factory and warehouse at Norwest in Sydney.Best of all, they are being launched on the market at special low prices for piggery operators. As part of the launch program, their Italian factory partners have subsidised a 50 percent discount to piggery operators until the end of this year. That means a 6%u201d heavyduty cast iron 15kW pump can be bought Ex Works from Sydney for less than $10,000.%u201cThat%u2019s a price breakthrough we never thought possible, but with the factory subsidy we can do it!%u201d Hales said. The company expects the new 4%u201d and 6%u201d pumps to replace submersible pumps in piggeries.%u201cWe know that big surface-mounted pumps are much easier to service than submersibles.%u201cHaving a pump that is surface mounted and fitted with a front cleanout port makes maintenance fast and simple.%u201cEven replacing the mechanical seal in the event of a dry run is easy,%u201d Hales said.%u201cThe big 6%u201d pump is a big lump of iron.%u201cIt weighs 160kg %u2013 and that%u2019s excluding the motor,%u201d he said.Stock is limited but piggery operators who act quickly can pick up a bargain and save tens of thousands of dollars.Aerators are comingThe company is now working on a range of aerators that will give Aussie the ability to come up with a complete pump and aerator package.%u201cOur aim is to have a no-frills version with a robust venturi aerator that provides high levels of oxygen for effective aerobic treatment of effluent ponds,%u201d Hales said.%u201cThat process has already been proven in abattoir waste as well.%u201dFurther information is available from the Australian Pump Industries website at aussiepumps.com.au %u25a0 Here%u2019s my Card %u25a0 Here%u2019s my Card %u25a0 Here%u2019s my CardAnke WoeckelVeterinarianTechnical Marketing -
